plants-vs-zombies-2-title

Plants vs Zombies 2 is here. The original Plants vs Zombies is one of favorite iPad game, I was obviously excited try this one.

The first thing people will notice about this sequel of a widely popular game is: the price. Yes, the sequel is free to play for everyone. But what’s the catch? How do the creators make money? They sell items in the game that will cost real money.

plants-vs-zombies-2-egypt-mapBasic gameplay of PvZ2 is generally similar to the original PvZ. We have to defend our “home” with plants that have abilities against zombies in various ways. There are different kinds of zombies, each with different characteristics. This time, our adventure starts from home, but we will travel far, back in time. First we go to Ancient Egypt, then we will visit Pirate Seas, and Wild West. The zombies are… well, dressed accordingly.

I have not finished playing PvZ2 myself. But there are many reviews out there stating clearly that it’s possible to actually finish this game without making any purchase.

So should we spend any real money to play this game?

plants-vs-zombies-2-buy-coins

The first category on in-game purchase is coins. Coins are generally obtainable as we play. I rarely use coins unless for something I really need. As long as you don’t overuse your coins, you should be ok without purchasing coins with your real dollar.

The second category is plants. Admittedly I have Photoshopped the screenshot a little bit so all the special plants can be seen. Some of these plants are my favorite in original PvZ, but now they’re only available though in-game purchase.

Imitater is a great plant to tick the slow cooling down time so I can put specific plant faster. If this is your playing style, then this plant might be for you.

Jalapeno is my favorite ! Especially when dealing with Zomboni (zombie with ice machine) and Zombie Bobsled Team. I miss this plant in PvZ2 and currently considering to make purchase for this plant.

Torchwood will basically double the damage from pea-based plants. While this plant is nice to use in PvZ, it is not a necessity in PvZ2. We can always choose other plants with better firepower. Not to mention now we have Plant Food.

Snow Pea has main function to slow down the enemies. As you play PvZ2, you will realize that this plant is replaceable as PvZ2 has other plants with similar functions to slow down zombies. Also, the combination by using Plant Food also creates more effect. You just need to do a bit of experiment to find out which replacement suits you best.

Power Lily is a new plant. Its function is to produce Plant Food. So far, I almost always sufficient Plant Food from those green zombies. So I don’t think I would need this plant.

Squash is another one of my favorite from original PvZ. Having a cheap one-use plant to be able to kill most zombies can be very useful during early few minutes of a game. I’m also tempted to get this one.

The third category is upgrades. 20% sun refund when shoveling is not really needed for two reasons. One, if we plan our defense carefully, there should be no reason to do a lot of shoveling. Two, playing PvZ2 is generally keep us “busier” as we need to always pay close attention to those zombies, there will be very limited time to do shoveling.

+1 Plant Food slot is also not a high priority. So far I can manage using the slots available from the game.

+25 starting sun is the most useless from all. It’s only useful in first few seconds in a game, and 25 sun can’t even buy 1 Sunflower.

+1 Seed slot is probably useful. I always like to have more choices during a round. This one is tempting me.

As the name suggest, bundle purchase combines one plant, one upgrade, and certain amount of coins. If the plant or the upgrade fancies you, you might want to consider getting a bundle rather than buying them separately.

In the end, everything depends on our playing style, and how much money we are willing to spend for a game. Have fun playing !
