I purchased Sony Portable Charger CP-V3 a while ago and so far consider it as my best backup battery. So when I need to have a portable charger with larger capacity, I decided to get another Sony battery. This time, my choice is Sony Portable Charger CP-F2L. It packs 7,000 mAh, a decent capacity for a travel day. Got it for a reasonable price of $49, which is not a bad deal.

Unlike most other portable chargers that use lithium-ion, Sony backup batteries use lithium-polymer. Not really sure the technical differences between them though, but so far I found lithium-polymer battery has lower temperature when charging. According to Sony, it can retain 90% capacity at 1,000 charges. It comes in 2 colors (silver and black), I choose silver. The form factor is very compact, and it’s very thin for a 7000 mAh battery. It can be recharged using an included micro-USB cable (very short), or we can use our own cable.

Sony CP-F2L comes with 2 USB-ports. According to the seller I purchased this battery from, the left-side is rated 2.1A, suitable to charge iPad and other tablets. The right-side is rated 1.5A, suitable to charge iPhone and other smartphones. Of course we can use this battery to charge other kinds of devices too.

Having a 1.5A (and 2.1A) power source means that it will charge a little bit faster compared to other portable chargers that only provide 1A energy. Because when we charge our smartphones on-the-go while using it actively, it can draw more than 1A or energy.

There are two LEDs in this product. An orange LED is located next to the micro-USB port (input) and will turn on while we charge the battery. A green LED is located between the USB ports (output) and will indicate how much energy is left. There is an on/off button. Pressing it once will turn on or off the charging. A long press will show the remaining power stored in the battery. The orange LED will flash 3, 2 or 1 times indicating the remaining energy, this LED flashing is repeated twice.

So far I consider this as a good purchase, but let’s see how many months will this battery survive.
