Govee Mini Bluetooth Thermometer-Hygrometer H5074 is a simple little gadget that does what it promises: it measures temperature and humidity. In the era of smart home when sensors are connected to WiFi or Matter, why would anyone needs a sensor that only connects to one phone using Bluetooth? The answer is simple: for travel. I bought this out of curiousity. I wanted to know if my checked-in luggage is stored at extreme temperature while a plane is travelling.
I choose this little product from Govee just because it was the smallest and cheapest I could find. At only AUD 15 (that is around USD 10), I could put this inside my luggage without taking too much space for my little experiment.
On arrival, I connected the sensor with my phone and it downloaded the historical reading of the temperature in the last few hours. Seems that my luggage did not go through any extreme temperature and the reading came quite stable around 18-22°C. But then, I realised that such reading is probably because I put this sensor inside my luggage with my clothing. So there is a possibility that my clothing did something to keep it warmer or cooler than the outside temperature. Since I am not comfortable in putting this outside my luggage, I concluded that my experiment is probably not valid.
The Bluetooth connection takes a second or two for my phone to connect to it using Govee app. Not the fastest, but also not the slowest I have seen. Temperature and relative humidity are shown in graphs and users can choose to see the reading in the last hour, day, week, month or year. We can set the app to alert us if temperature or humidity hits certain point. Alert can be delivered as app notification, or as an email. I am not sure how effective this feature can be since this device is a Bluetooth sensor, which I have to connect to my phone to get its readings. I suppose Govee is doing that feature for their other always-connected sensors.
After the unfruitful experiment, I end up with nice little gadget that will tell me temperature and humidity everywhere I bring it to. At that price, I guess it is not so bad. Plus, it does give me the opportunity to write this post ;)
