A mouse is arguably still the most popular pointing device in modern computers today. There are “new” alternatives from trackpad, track-ball or even camera sensor. I personally have bought Apple Magic Trackpad, but end up never use it. Most of the time, I would automatically rely on my mouse to do my stuff in computer.

Talking about mouse, I have long history of searching an “ideal” model. Somehow I broke my previous mouse devices quite often, especially the clicking mechanism. I tried Apple’s Mighty Mouse, didn’t feel comfortable using it. I was tempted to buy Apple Magic Mouse, but didn’t like how it feels below my palm when I tried it in Apple Store. Then my choice went to Logitech mouse. Tried few models before finally choosing this one as my favorite.

logitech-mouse-m515-02Logitech Mouse M515 is a wireless mouse using the famous Logitech Unifying receiver. This model is promoted as “couch mouse” since its bottom is sealed and the sensor can read movement on almost any surface, including sofa and carpet. I use it for my desktop computer, on a proper table, with a proper mouse pad though.

One thing I love about this mouse is the feature to choose two styles of scrolling. We can choose the normal scroll (with clicking feel every scroll step) or hyper-fast scroll. I use hyper-fast scroll 90% of the time and find myself saving time and efforts to do many computing activities because of this feature. Another feature is tilt wheel, the scroll wheel can be used to make left and right movement. This gesture is used to go back and forth in web browsing. Unfortunately this feature doesn’t work on Mac computers.

The battery life is another amazing feature of this mouse. I was skeptical when I originally read 2 year battery life claimed by Logitech. How can a battery lasts so long to power a wireless mouse? Turns out, this mouse has the capability to differentiate whether a movement is caused by hand grabbing movement or not. I try to move the mouse using one finger, and the pointer didn’t move at all on my monitor. My hand must actually grab the mouse before it will detect the movements. This saves a lot of battery when the mouse is on standby (accidental movements of few points are common due to minor bumps to the table, or even as side effect of people walking nearby). I never turned off my M515 at night (always on) and the battery can actually last for more than a year (still going strong by the time I write this review).
