box-syncI usually use Dropbox to sync working files between my devices and SpiderOak to backup my files to the cloud. Box is a new alternative to Dropbox, also available in Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. The concept is similar to Dropbox, we have a special folder in our computer, and any file we put there will be synced across devices (and stored in their cloud storage). The noticeable difference is the amount of maximum storage offered for the free accounts. Dropbox offers 5GB free space, and I somehow have increased it to 19GB by following their offers. Box offers 50GB free storage.

So I created an account and installed the client software in my iPhone and my Mac. Compared to Dropbox client software, Box Sync is pretty basic. All we get is one folder called “Box Sync” and everything will be synced across. We can’t selectively choose to sync some sub-folders only like Dropbox. We can’t choose to sync any folder outside the default Box Sync folder like what SpiderOak can do.

The upload process is slower than Dropbox, but it’s still bearable. But the serious lack of customization options in the client software makes me decide to stay with Dropbox for my important working files.

Business account in Box will give us 1 TB of cloud storage for $15 per month, plus some extra features like password protected links, extra security, full-text search, greater access control and version history. For me, I decided to use Box to backup not-so-important files so I have fresh capacity for my SpiderOak account.
